Catch-up cleaning plan
Fallen behind? Don’t try to do everything. Tell us how long it’s been and how much time you have, and get a power-hour plan that puts the jobs with the biggest visible payoff first, with a built-in timer.

2 · Your power-hour plan
57/60′Ordered by how much visible difference each job makes. Stop when the timer ends, even mid-list; what’s left goes to next session.
- 1Gather rubbish in a bag, room by room10′
- 2Load dishwasher / wash up, clear the sink19′
- 3Clear and wipe kitchen counters and hob10′
- 4Toilet and bathroom sink10′
- 5Laundry basket sweep: collect clothes, start a load8′
Next session: Clear floors: one box for “put away later” · Clear the dining table and sofa · Vacuum the main walkways · Change the bed sheets · Clear out old food from the fridge · Fresh towels and a clean dish cloth · Shower or tub scrub · Mop kitchen and bathroom floors · Empty the “put away later” box
Start the timer and follow the list. It moves on when each task’s time is up; tap “Done” to move on early.
Why the order matters
When a home has slid, the instinct is to start somewhere satisfying, like scrubbing the shower. But after 20 minutes the dishes are still in the sink and the floor is still covered, so the home looks exactly as bad.
Catch-up cleaning works the other way round: remove the things that make a room look chaotic first (rubbish, dishes, clutter on flat surfaces and floors), then the hygiene basics (toilet, counters), then the detail work. Professional cleaners and speed-cleaning guides use the same idea: move fast, don’t detail until the room is clear.
Speed cleaning rules that actually help
- Set a timer and stop when it ends. A finite session is easier to start.
- Carry a bag and a box. Rubbish in the bag, “belongs elsewhere” items in the box. Don’t walk each item back to its room mid-session.
- One direction. Work around each room clockwise, top to bottom.
- Start the slow things first: the dishwasher, a laundry load, cleaner soaking in the toilet.
- Music or a podcast makes 45 minutes feel like 20 for a lot of people.
Same 30 minutes, two orders
Drag the slider through a session. The bar shows how “together” the room looks.
Clutter first 44%
Doing: Clear surfaces and floor
Satisfying job first 20%
Doing: Wipe counters
Clutter and dishes carry most of the visual mess, so clearing them first gets you to “presentable” far sooner.
After the power hour: getting back on schedule
Once the visible chaos is gone, don’t attempt the rest in one go. Restart your normal daily reset tomorrow and do one more catch-up session in a few days for the “next session” list. Anything still left can wait for its turn in your zone rotation.

Questions people ask
How do I catch up on cleaning when I’m overwhelmed?
Pick a short, timed session (30–60 minutes) and follow a fixed order: rubbish, dishes, clear surfaces and floors, then toilet and counters. Stop when the timer ends. Repeat in a day or two rather than doing it all at once.
What is a cleaning power hour?
A single timed hour of focused cleaning, usually once a week, used for jobs that don’t fit into daily routines or to catch up after a busy stretch.
How do you speed clean a house in an hour?
Start the dishwasher and a laundry load, gather rubbish, clear and wipe kitchen counters, clean the toilet and bathroom sink, clear floors into a box, and vacuum the main walkways. Skip detail work until the next session.
What if I can’t keep up at all?
Lower the standard for cosmetic jobs, split chores with household members, or consider paid help for the heaviest jobs. If low energy or motivation lasts weeks, it’s worth talking to a doctor; it can be a health issue, not a willpower one.
