Cleaning schedule for working moms and dads

Kids multiply dishes, laundry and floor clutter. This schedule keeps the daily part short and shared, gives each adult whole zones, and leaves most of the weekend for family.

The short answer

  1. Every evening: about 55 minutes in total, so roughly 25–30 each for two adults. Dishes, counters, a toy reset with the kids, one laundry load started.
  2. One zone per weeknight: bathrooms, kitchen detail, bedrooms, floors.
  3. Saturday: about two hours in total (an hour each), while kids do age-appropriate jobs alongside.
  4. Sunday: off. The "good enough" standard is the default here; raise it when the kids are older.

What makes it work

Split by time, not by task count

Laundry for a family of four is many times bigger than taking out the bins. Use the chore chart to divide minutes fairly, weighted by each adult’s free time.

Make kids part of the reset

Even preschoolers can put toys in a basket and carry their plate to the sink. It’s slower at first, but it builds the habit and shrinks your share over time.

Run laundry daily

A load a day (start before school, fold after dinner) stops the weekend laundry mountain that eats family time.

Other situations: cleaning schedule for a full-time job, cleaning schedule for shift workers, cleaning schedule for working from home.

Questions people ask

How do working moms keep the house clean?

Mostly by keeping the daily part tiny and consistent (dishes, counters, toy reset, one laundry load), sharing whole zones with a partner, getting kids to help, and accepting a "good enough" standard for cosmetic jobs.

What chores can kids do to help?

Toddlers and preschoolers: pick up toys, put clothes in the hamper. School-age kids: set and clear the table, match socks, make their bed, feed pets. Teens: vacuum, clean a bathroom, do their own laundry. Supervise any use of cleaning products.

How many hours a week does a family house take to clean?

For a three- or four-bedroom house with kids, our estimates come to roughly seven to ten hours a week at a "tidy" standard, with dishes and laundry the biggest share. That’s why splitting it matters.
