Weekly cleaning schedule

A weekly cleaning schedule template with a time on every task, plus complete example weeks for a studio, a two-bed apartment, a family house and a house with kids and a dog.

The template in one glance

A weekly schedule that survives real life has three layers. Everything else is detail.

1 · Daily reset

15–25 min

Dishes, counters and hob, a five-minute pick-up, pets and kids’ stuff. Every day you’re not resting.

2 · One zone a day

10–30 min

Bathrooms one day, bedrooms and sheets another, floors another. A single area done properly beats a skim of everything.

3 · Weekend block

45–90 min

Laundry, the full vacuum and mop, and one rotating monthly job. Keep one day completely off.

Flex list this week: Laundry: sort, fold, put away (hands-on) (26)

This is week 1 of a 4-week rotation; every-2-weeks and monthly jobs move between weeks. Build your own on the schedule generator.

Apartment vs house: what changes

Apartments save mostly on floors and bathrooms. A studio’s entire weekly clean fits into about 30 minutes a day, so it can be done in short evening slots with a free weekend. The risks are different: an open-plan kitchen spreads grease to the living area, and windowless bathrooms need ventilation to keep mould away.

Houses add bathrooms, stairs and more floor. Each extra bathroom adds roughly 30 minutes a week in our estimates, and bedrooms add sheets and dusting. Past three bedrooms, the weekly load usually needs either more than one cleaner in the household or a lower standard on cosmetic jobs. The chore splitter helps with the first; the “good enough” setting with the second.

Making a weekly schedule stick

  • Plan to your worst normal week, not your best one. If Thursdays are always long, make Thursday reset-only.
  • Attach zone days to existing habits: bathroom after the Monday shower, sheets on Saturday morning.
  • Use the flex list, not guilt. Missed jobs don’t pile up forever: the rotation brings them back.
  • Review after two weeks. Adjust the minutes, not your self-esteem.

Questions people ask

What should be on a weekly cleaning schedule?

Weekly: toilets, sinks, showers, kitchen surfaces and sink, trash and recycling, floors in busy areas, laundry and bed linen (every one to two weeks). Daily: dishes, counters and a quick pick-up. Dusting and appliance fronts can go every two weeks.

How many hours a week should cleaning take?

In our estimates at a “tidy” standard: about 3 hours 45 minutes for a studio, just under 5 hours for a two-bed apartment for two, and 7–10 hours for a three- or four-bedroom family house, dishes and laundry included.

Should I clean a little every day or all at once?

Short daily resets plus one focused zone a day keeps the home near “guest-ready” most of the time for about the same total minutes as one long weekend clean. The interactive chart on our home page shows why.
