Cleaning schedule when you work from home
Working from home means more dishes, more crumbs and a desk to keep clear, but also natural breaks. Spread the chores over your breaks and your weekends stay completely free.
The short answer
- Morning break (5 min): unload the dishwasher, start a laundry load.
- Lunch (10 min): wipe the kitchen after you eat.
- Afternoon break (15–20 min): the day’s zone job, such as the bathroom or the floors.
- End of the workday (10 min): clear the desk, a 5-minute pick-up. It doubles as a "commute" that ends the workday.
- Weekends: off. That’s the payoff of doing it in breaks.

What makes it work
Chores as movement breaks
Getting up regularly during desk work is widely recommended. A 5-minute chore is a break that also leaves something done.
Keep it out of meeting time
Timebox each chore to the break. Anything bigger goes to the evening or the flex list.
Close the workspace daily
Clearing the desk at the end of the day keeps clutter from spreading and helps separate work from home.
Other situations: cleaning schedule for a full-time job, cleaning schedule for working parents, cleaning schedule for shift workers.
Questions people ask
How do I keep my house clean while working from home?
Split the day’s cleaning into break-sized jobs: dishwasher and laundry in the morning, kitchen and the day’s zone at lunch, desk and pick-up at the end of the day. For a two-bed apartment that comes to about 45 minutes a day across three or four breaks, and weekends stay free.
Is it okay to clean during work hours?
Use your own breaks and follow your employer’s rules. Short tasks that fit a normal break are the point; anything longer belongs outside work time.
